Sunova Surf XXX-Tech 10’6″ x 30″ review

Sunova Review

From Lee, he purchased his Sunova from Jay Sails in Hobart Tasmania

I spent a few weeks doing a lot of research for a new SUP board to replace my Naish Nalu 10’6″. The shortlist included a Sunova

  • Naish Nalu GTW 10’6″ x 30″
  • JP Allrounder Pro 10′ x 29″
  • Fanatic Pro Wave 9’6″ x 31.25″
  • Sunova Surf XXX-Tech 10’6″ x 30″

I settled on the Sunova, mainly because of the quality of finish, lightness and strength. Sunova have been making boards since 1976 so they have got the science down to a fine art. Reviews suggested you could even hit the deck with a hammer and not even scratch it, no rail tape needed etc, and of course, it surfed and paddled well. I lashed out with the XXX-tech version and it is a pure lightweght piece of art with the balsa fibre-glass construction with carbon fibre around the rails (which are sharper than the Nalu). It has a little more volume at the forward third than the Nalu and is a 5 litres less in volume.

At this stage, I can justify one SUP board so it had to be an allrounder. Looking back over the last year, I probably paddled the Nalu 25% of the time when surf was out. When the surf was up, the Nalu was a very well-behaved and predictable board.

I’ve taken the Surf out twice now in pretty crappy conditions at Carlton River and Park Beach and it delights. I had to move the centre fin as far forward as it would go to loosen it up more than the Nalu (single fin). Now it turns beautifully and paddles/glides very well. There remains a lot to learn.

You could add the following – after an epic session at the River late yesterday-

The Sunova on waste-high waves is fast and as smooth as silk even across offshore wind chop.
